Historically,
a renowned centre for piracy and smuggling, Chausey
was also the ceaseless battleground between the English
and French. This forgotten archipelago forms the only
territory in the Channel that has remained in the
hands of the French. The 17kms journey from Granville
takes about 1 hour to complete by boat.
The tides can reach up to 15m. The backward surges
uncover immense sandbanks which temporarily connect
the islands. Only "Grande
Ile" et "Anneret"
are inhabited but the other smaller islands offer
a wealth of marine birds, shellfish and other sea
life. These islets are invaded by fishermen on foot
during the lowest tides. Discover the area on one
of the year-round shuttle services. In Chausey, take
an ornithological visit of the Grande Ile. (discovery
of the local sea-life and its diversity, identification
of the birds, try out some of the observational hardware)
